Cupboard House originally served as the “information center” commissioned by the Jut Art Museum in 2016 for its outdoor exhibition Home 2025. This work was taken as an illustrative example of how to substitute “creation” for “design” at that time. By introducing the creative idea of “massively interweaving,” the artist intervened in the production of micro-architecture with the furniture craftsmanship of wooden cupboard, and transmuted the information center per se into an exhibit of the exhibition. In order to dovetail with the theme of “home,” the artist also conceived of the information center as a dwelling. In Project: The Folly, the artist seeks to demonstrate the idea of “massively interweaving” once more. By collecting free second-hand houseware via the eponymous Facebook group, the artist has reconstructed a second-hand house with the abandoned information center and houseware of every stripe, so as to investigate the relationship between “humanity” and “dwelling” in the age of overflowing resources.

About the Artist

Earning his M.Arch. from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, HSIAO Yu-Chih currently teaches as an assistant professor in the Department of Architecture, Shih Chien University. He has long applied his idea of “massively interweaving” to his projects, teaching, creation, non-profit workshop, curatorial practice, and community management. Apart from employing micro-space creation as a means of urban planning to pool all available resources in a cross-project fashion, he also treats the power of design as the proactive momentum for social change, a creative force that transforms surpluses into nutrients.
